Windows Mobile Fun With HTC Diamond II

How well we remember HTC's first full touchscreen handset, 2007's "iPhone-killing" Touch. And oh, how we quaked with mirth at its endeavors to cover a Windows Mobile interface underneath the fine thin facade of a touchscreen, which responded with a dispassionate shrug to all but the most brisk prods, and a "3D" interface. It was a bit like placing lipstick and a nice hat on the Elephant Man. Now though, times have changed.

Even with the 3.2-inch TFT LCD display at the front end, the Touch Diamond II is still smaller than you'd anticipate. Slim and light, it makes an accordant change from the cumbersome devices presently choking the market like so many weighty babies.
Because of consistent applications like Office Mobile, Exchange push email and GPS application programs, the Touch Diamond II will be the device of many. However, it's the greatly developed, five-meg camera that stands out here. Photographs are of high quality and it's also fast --  a great advantage over numerous phone cameras. You can even manually adjust the autofocus, just by tapping on the screen. The only thing nonexistent is a flash.
While it's operating under Windows Mobile 6.1, HTC's TouchFlo 3D skin now does a nicer task of covering the faults of that troublesome Operating system. One thing it can't hide is WinMo's tendency to be sluggish. Again, it's not as bad as past models, but still leaves it falling behind behind other cellular phone on the market. On occasion, the unresponsive touchscreen is unhelpful also. Whether it's down to a slow central processor or terrible coding, frustration results when the mobile telephone pauses to load, say, the photo album. It's doubly bothersome on the Diamond II because you can swirl through its 3D icons at a fast speed, only to get stuck when you need to open an app. Hopefully a firmware update, frequently the rescuer of initially sluggish HTC phones, will come to the rescue again.
Connectivity? With the 7.2Mbps HSDPA mobile internet speeds, the Wi-Fi functionality worked perfectly but we found it hard to really get a true 3G connection in points where we usually go on the internet. In fact, reception in general proved to be a challenge. Despite that, the HTC Touch Diamond II is a very good Windows Mobile phone. It pales in comparison to the iPhone, BlackBerry Bold or Nokia N97 for the universal user experience, but what the Diamond II lacks in processing power and touchscreen reaction, it makes up in efficiency, dependability and push email power.
The unequivocal army of Windows Mobile devotees will take this over any of the cellular telephones mentioned above any day, of course  they'd sooner be seen cross-dressing than with an iPhone. If HTC fixes the 3G it'll be a very high-power business tool.
