microsoft windows update

Windows update is classed as a core feature for any internet ready PC or server these days.  Microsoft have spent a lot of money developing the technology both within Microsoft Windows and on their internet servers to ensure the system is both fast, stable and worthwhile.

A system, be it a server or the desktop needs to be updated on a regular basis - but why?
  1. Security patch updates - It's a sad state of affairs but in the last decade or so, operating systems like Microsoft Windows have became so complex that the coders who put it together miss bits out of the code, leading to security vulnerabilities.  Some of these vulnerabilities can be easily exploited by hackers over the internet.  Taking control of your PC, stealing files from your hard drive, or configuring your computer to be part of massive internet attacks on government systems are some examples of the intentions of a hacker when they do get into your PC.  The only way to avoid these scenarios is to install the regular security updates supplied by Microsoft on a regular basis on to your own PC to keep these security breaches to a minimum and keep your data safe.
  2. Service pack updates - Microsoft Windows has been known in the past to have flaws in the operating system code which, although minor from a coding perspective can cause untold problems for the end user.  Software incompatibilities, crashing programs and even blue screen of death errors can be common in various circumstances.  Installing service packs assist in closing these gaps in the code and improve the overall integrity and efficiency of the Microsoft Windows operating system.  This in turn improves the end user experience which of course is the ideal scenario
  3. Software updates/fixes - Like service pack updates, these updates and fixes are released for fixing bugs within Microsoft software, such as Microsoft Office or similar applications.  These updates are installed onto existing program installations and are used to eradicate or reduce errors caused by coding errors within the application at fault.
So is it worth running the update service on your installation?
Of course it is,  anyone choosing not to run the Windows Update Service is putting themselves and their data at severe risk from hackers who can compromise your PC, you data, or both.
Stay safe online and keep your installation up to date on a regular basis.
