Windows Phone 7 (WP7) is a mobile operating system engineered by Microsoft, and is the next generation of their Windows Mobile platform. It launched in the US & Canada on November 8, 2010. Microsoft presents a new user interface with WP7, which integrates the operating system with other services, and plans to firmly manage which hardware platform it runs on.
Currently, the smart phone supports five different languages including English, German, French, Spanish and Italian. Like Apple's iPhone store, Windows Phone Marketplace offers buying and selling applications in 17 countries and regions around the world.
Microsoft Windows Phone offers an innovative user interface, which is code named as Metro, and is based upon Microsoft's WP7 design system. The start screen, also referred to as the home screen, is composed of "Tiles". Basically, Tiles are links or associations to features, applications, functions and separate items, for instance web pages, contacts, or media components. As always, users can rearrange, add, or remove Tiles. Tiles are active and dynamically update in real time. Taking the example of email, the tile for an email account would show the unread messages count or it could display a live update of stock market updates.
The default Windows Phone 7 user interface uses multi touch technology and has a dark theme that enhances battery life on OLED screens, as entirely black pixels don't release light. If desired, the user may prefer a light theme in its place, and can also select from several available colors. By doing so, user interface components such as tiles are displayed in the user's selected color. Other third-party programs can be automatically themed with these colors.
WP7 users enter text by the use of an on-screen virtual keyboard, which has a devoted key for adding emoticons. For convenience and ease of use; word prediction and spell checking features are supported, and users may modify a word after it has been input simply by tapping the word. Related words will also be recommended as alternatives.
When it comes to an internet browser, the Internet Explorer feature offers great interaction and allows the user to keep a list of favorite web pages, and display a tile related to a web page on the main screen. The browser supports tabbed browsing with up to 6 tabs, which can all load simultaneously.
Microsoft has stated that software updates will be available to Windows Phone 7 users through Microsoft Update. Microsoft has also developed software that will directly update any phone running WP7, instead of relying on wireless service providers.
Windows Phone 7 appears to have what it takes to compete and potentially win in the hard won smart phone space right now. The genuine advantage here is that Microsoft knows software, operating systems, and gaming, and it shows in the OS, visuals, and gaming enhancements. They also have the experience to know what works and what doesn't, and how to fix, edit, and update instantly. Will it knock the iPhone off its pedestal? It just might.
