If you're a T Mobile subscriber and in the market for a BlackBerry, than there is two types of T Mobile BlackBerrys you should be looking at:
- Curve 3G 9300 (Graphite Grey)
- Bold 9780 (white or black)
Out of the BlackBerry cell phones the Bold 9780 is most likely your best option. It is one of the most popular handsets amongst the corporate sector, and yet still maintains a popular presence amongst younger generations.
The main reasons for the Bold and to a less extent the Curve's success is the following:
- Full QWERTY keyboard - possibly the best in the game. Research In Motion (RIM), BlackBerry's Operating System (OS), has pioneered the QWERTY physical keyboard to give us the latest model on the Bold 9780. This keyboard curves a little upwards at the ends, and the slightly raised keys are easy to find.
- Communication - helped by the physical keyboard, communication on the Bold and the Curve is top priority. Messaging and emailing is quick and easy to respond to, and synchronizing your work email accounts, calendar, contacts using BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) works well and updates in real time. Added to this BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) unique to RIM is a great way to stay in touch with your friends no matter where they are on the globe at no additional cost.
- OS 6 - this the latest OS from RIM comes pre- installed on the Bold giving you enhanced web browsing, improved home screen layout and some software improvements to allow your handset to run quicker.
If you are wondering what the big difference is between the Bold 9780 and the previous model, the 9700, then here you go:
- OS 6 pre-installed.
- Similar design with the chrome edges replaced with a black bezel, the keyboard slightly curved upwards, and the back cover is rubberized and sturdy.
- Increased memory (RAM)
- Battery life that will last you up to three days at moderate use.
- Improved media functionality, in particular the music player and 5 mega pixel camera.
If web browsing is an important feature for you then the Bold and the Curve are probably not the best phones for you. While the connectivity speed is reasonable on the 3G network, the BlackBerry handsets do not take advantage of the T Mobile's 4G network which is faster than the other networks at an average download speed of 2.3 Mbps. A good phone to consider for web browsing on T Mobile's 4G networks is the G2 and myTouch 4G - both are excellent options with the myTouch taking pole position.
If you are looking for a slightly cheaper option the BlackBerry Curve is a great alternative to the Bold. In many respects it is very similar. You are able to upgrade the OS to BlackBerry 6, and take full advantage of BES, BlackBerry Internet Services (BIS), BES, BBM, etc. In addition, it has a similar physical QWERTY keyboard that works very well. Some people have experienced 'freezing' with the Curve if you are sending large numbers of emails or have a number of applications running at once. This might require you to restart your device, which is slow to re-load. However, most users do not have this issue and love their Curve. Directly from T Mobile the Bold will set you back $50 with a two year contract, while the Curve is free. At some of the more competitively priced online cell phone stores you can get both the Curve and the Bold for free with a two year contract. In this case I would definitely recommend you go for the Bold.
