Microsoft's gadget Kinect made history as the fastest selling gadget ever. According to he latest rumors, Windows 8 (Microsoft's upcoming operating system) might get full Kinect support.
You can already easily share your files between the XBOX and your PC. However, it looks like we might be able to use the Kinect system to control our personal computer very soon. Rumor has it that Windows 8 will allow consumers with a Kinect system to play games and control the Windows 8 operating system without a mouse, which is quite a big step for the entire industry.
How will "Kinect for Windows" work?
According to the latest rumors, the Kinect device will be attached to the top of your monitor. A separate microphone will allow you to control your computer with your voice as well. One of the rumored Windows 8 feature is the "rapid login": Once the Kinect device recognizes you, it will automatically log you in.

Innovation or Re-hash?
Microsoft's Kinect and Windows 8 could revolutionize the entire PC market, while others believe this is just a 're-hash' of technology that was already there and it will take years until the consumer gets used to it (similar example: 3D technology has been around for a while and people are still not 100% used to it and it's still very expensive.)
The key technology has been around for a while, but Microsoft realized the great potential of this new technology. After acquiring various related companies, such as 3D depth camera maker 3DV Systems and gesture control maker Canesta, Microsoft has the best technology firms to create a cheap motion controlling system that is not as expensive as 3D-technology. In fact, the Kinect is a rather cheap gadget - a year ago a similar system would have been extremely expensive.
Will Microsoft release Kinect for Windows soon?
Microsoft clearly has the know-how, but the big question is if Microsoft can finish the development until next year. 2012 is the rumoured release year of Windows 8 and we expect that Microsoft will have it ready until then at the very least. However, it wouldn't be a big surprise if they would actually release Kinect for Windows 7 before 2012.
At the MIX 2011, Microsoft demoed the Kinect SDK and showed us how easy it is to navigate the WorldWide Telescope with your Kinect. Well, it looks like Microsoft might be able to pull it off! The intuitive control of a PC with only a few gestures that we saw in Minority Report just a few years ago will soon become reality. We are truly living in exciting times!
The demo gives us hope that Windows 8 will have full Kinect support. Who isn't looking forward to just clapping his hand to shut down the PC or do some simple gestures to run a scheduled backup, start a movie or open the ebook reader?
