It comes with a 3.5inch screen with 480 x 800 pixel resolution, plus a decent 5 megapixel camera. The phone has 8GB storage capacity and good connectivity, which is a plus. Overall, it's a good phone but its bulk and slightly uncomfortable keyboard let it down slightly.

The recent close proximity of Jupiter and Venus in the night sky sent smartphone owners scrabbling to download Google Sky Map. Anyone on Windows Phone 7 would have been left with the familiar feeling of being the odd one out at the party.

A trawl through the Windows Phone Market turned up an excellent alternative; Sky Map Free. As with most free apps, the trade-off for not upgrading to the paid version (£1.29) is the inclusion of adverts. Thankfully, these are fairly unobtrusive, being displayed at the bottom of the map.

In most ways, Sky Map Free is vastly similar to Google Sky Map. Upon installation you might need to shake your phone to get it to find your location correctly. Once this is done, point it at the sky.

The map itself is detailed and stars can be added or removed depending on how much information you want on screen. Constellations are presented with their outlines, so Capricornus will appear as a goat. Items in the night sky can be searched and you can zoom in to pin-point what you're looking at more precisely.

It wasn't immediatey clear exactly what some of the options do, but a quick tap displayed a label to explain its function. The interface in general can be a bit confusing though, which makes navigating around the app a headache.

As a way of better understanding the night sky, or just working out what that shiny thing is, Sky Map Free is a great app.

ATT getting update ready for Windows Phone 7 devices

Just about one month ago, AT&T made an announcement that the company would not be pushing the latest update out for Windows Phone powered devices.  The update, known as the Windows Phone 8170 update, would take care of bugs in the software.  The company had since changed its mind a little and said this week that they will be offering the 8170 update after all and it would also come with the original fixes “and more”.  The big question now is what does “and more” consist of?

One of the Community Managers at the forums on the AT&T web site has confirmed the plans to send out the update and she planned to start a separate thread to update as the information becomes available for customers.  For right now, the 8170 update bundle is on hold and the news will leave plenty to wonder about for the next week or at least until AT&T decides to get their story straight.  Many have speculated that the “more” part of the update could mean it will be bundled with the Windows Phone 7.5 release in the future.  AT&T had mentioned in other interviews that they are committed to an update after the 8170, but did not reveal any sort of timetable for that.

The just released Nokia Lumia 900 is on sale now for as little as $19 for existing customers.

Over the last couple of months, AT&T has been in the news a lot regarding the launch of the new Lumia 900 on their network.  The company has since launched the new Windows Phone powered smartphone by Nokia and it was received very well by the mobile community.  Shortly after the launch of the new device users noticed a software glitch that causes connection loss in some of the phones.  For right now, Nokia has decided, and announced, that they plan to offer any new Lumia 900 users a $100 credit on their AT&T bill, as long as the phone is activated by April 21st.  This makes the new Lumia free to customers with a new two-year contract.

Basically, Nokia made an announcement once the glitch was found and issued a statement saying, “In short, a memory management issue was discovered that could, in some cases, lead to loss of data connectivity. This issue is purely in the phone software, and is not related to either phone hardware or the network itself.”  Microsoft also applauded Nokia for the company’s quick response.

This free app, compatible with devices that run the Mango (Windows Phone 7.5) update overcomes that drawback, providing an easy to use, Metro-style user interface to browse files and folders in your SkyDrive.

Cloud Recorder

This ad-supported free app naturally requires a network connection (wireless or data) as well as a SoundCloud account. It’s a very nice and easy way to record and upload voice memos or other types of voice recording. There is also a tool that also lets you review what has been recorded.

Titles and descriptions can be added to the recordings before uploading; while this might sound like the perfect app it does have one shortcoming – the inability to sign into SoundCloud with your Facebook account via the app. To get around this the menu offers an option to open the site in Internet Explorer.

It’s a minor quibble over a useful app; Cloud Recorder is available from the Windows Phone Marketplace either in your browser, on your phone or in the Zune desktop app.

Free Music Cloud

Another app that accesses SoundCloud, this time the focus is on streaming great music to your phone. A vast archive of audio tracks has been uploaded by other SoundCloud users and these are all accessible on your Windows Phone using the Free Music Cloud app.

Free to use (thanks to ad-support that can be removed by upgrading), the app also offers the facility to download the track or album you’re listening to.

While there are some copyright-baiting tracks uploaded, the best stuff you will find is provided by unsigned artists and DJs, with great music and mashups easily available.

A search tool makes it very easy to find music and queue it to play later, and the ability to sign into your SoundCloud account enables some useful social tools . This is a great use for cloud storage and you can find more details in the Marketplace.

BoxFiles for Dropbox

Dropbox is fast becoming the most popular cross-platform cloud storage solution, and with BoxFiles for Dropbox on Windows Phone you can enjoy free (ad-supported) access to the contents of your Dropbox cloud.

Documents that you have uploaded (Word, Excel, PDF, etc.), music, videos and pictures can all be viewed and edited, copied, deleted, renamed… you basically have full access to the contents of the Dropbox account. Additionally the app allows you to directly upload photos to it from the Pictures Hub.
